Oliur Rahman Sun
TUTOR/ Writing visual Journalism
Oliur Sun is a sunyatavadin and a creator of knowledge in textual and visual forms, currently working as the Chief Wordsmith at Drik Picture Library, Dhaka. He is also the co-founder of Bodhichitta, a platform that organizes and archives discourses on philosophy in Bangla. He regularly contributes to national dailies and occasionally writes for socially conscious international media on diverse social, political and cultural issues. His work explores decolonial trajectories, intersectionalities, and queerness.
Monirul Alam
TUTOR/ PhotojournalismMonirul Alam was born in Old Dhaka, Bangladesh, in 1975. He took up photography in 1994. After completing his Bachelors in Accounting from the National University, he went on to graduate from Pathshala South Asian Media Institute and took a post graduate certificate course on Broadcast and Cross Media Journalism at the BRAC University jointly with the Erasmus University based in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Monirul worked with the daily Prothom newspaper as a deputy chief photojournalist. In 2018, he joined epa as visual journalist in Bangladesh.
Md. Aminuzzaman
TUTOR/ Video journalism
Bangladeshi photographer and multimedia journalist and have been working for University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) as a Senior Lecturer (Department of Media Studies and Journalism). His work had been exhibited in Bangladesh, Germany, Netherlands and Malaysia. His images were published in international publications like the Time Journal of Photography, The Saudi Aramco World and the book, Our World of Water by Oxfam GB. He completed his Master of Commerce (Marketing) in 1995 and Bachelor of Commerce (Hon in Marketing) in 1994 from the University of Dhaka before pursuing my PhD in history at Vrije Universiteit Brussels in Belgium.
Dr. Shahidul Alam
TUTOR/ Interactive journalism & immersive experience
A photographer, writer, curator and activist, Shahidul Alam obtained a PhD in chemistry at London University before switching to photography. He returned to his hometown Dhaka in 1984, where he photographed the democratic struggle to remove General Ershad. A former president of the Bangladesh Photographic Society, Alam set up the award-winning Drik agency, the Bangladesh Photographic Institute and Pathshala, the South Asian Institute of Photography, considered one of the finest schools of photography in the world. Director of the Chobi Mela festival and chairman of Majority World agency, Alam’s work has been exhibited in galleries such as MOMA in New York, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Royal Albert Hall in London and The Museum of Contemporary Arts in Tehran. A guest curator of the National Art Gallery in Malaysia and the Brussels Biennale, Alam’s numerous photographic awards include the Mother Jones and the Andrea Frank Awards. He has been a jury member in prestigious international contests, including World Press Photo, which he chaired. A Honourary Fellow of the Bangladesh Photographic Society and the Royal Photographic Society Alam is a visiting professor of Sunderland University in the UK.
Dr. Saydia Gulrukh
TUTOR/ Journalism ethicsSaydia Gulrukh Kamal is a journalist working for the newspaper “New Age” and a labour rights defender. In the past decade, she has campaigned to bring justice for the victims of incidents in garment factories, such as the 2012 Tazreen factory fire that killed at least 112 workers and the 2013 Savar Building (Rana Plaza) collapse, where 1129 people were killed. Saydia has led protests and investigations for several years demanding justice for these and other violations of factory workers’ rights, and she has written about women factory workers as part of a collective of feminist bloggers. She has also joined the campaign “Justice for Kalpana Chakma”, Stop Rampal coal-based Power Plant and Stop Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant.
Taslima Akter
TUTOR/ Investigative journalism and safety guidelineTaslima Akhter turned to documentary photography after many years as an activist with workers’ and women’s rights organizations, with whom she continues to work. For her documentary photography is a continuation of her activism. As a photographer, she likes to work on issues relating to gender, the environment and culture, as well as exploring spaces of social discrimination. The TIME Magazine has selected Taslima’s photo Final Embrace as one of top ten photos of the year 2013. Her work was exhibited in USA and China. She won the Best Photography Award from 5Th Dali International Photography Exhibition in China in 2013.
Prateebha Tuladhar
INTERNATIONAL EXPERT/ Writing Visual JournalismPrateebha Tuladhar is a journalist, teacher and communication worker based in Kathmandu. She has worked as a journalist for over 15 years, and taught photo journalists for ten years. She has also worked in the development sector as a communication specialist, managing lifeline communication and environmental campaigns. She is currently teaching at the Asian Center for Journalism at the Ateneo de Manila University, Philippines and the Communication University of Zhejiang for the University of Bolton. She is a contributing writer for Nepali Times. In the past, she has written for German Press Agency-dpa and The Kathmandu Post and has produced short videos for BBC Media Action, National Geographic and The China Daily. She writes poetry when she finds inspiration.
Jimmy A Domingo
INTERNATIONAL EXPERT/ PhotojournalismJimmy A. Domingo started freelance photojournalism work in the 1983 during the dark days of Martial Law in the Philippines. He continues to contribute news and editorial images to various Philippine, Asian and international news organizations, and media agencies. He also provides documentary photography, multimedia production and training consultancy services to corporate, international NGOs and government institutions. His photographs have been exhibited in various places and published in numerous books and magazines
Ravi Bajpai
INTERNATIONAL EXPERT/ Video JournalismRavi Bajpai is based out of Hong Kong and works as Managing Multimedia Producer for China Daily, managing video distribution and growth across the Asia-Pacific region. He co-leads a team of digital video journalists producing feature documentaries and short videos across Asia.
Until he moved to Hong Kong in 2019, Ravi Bajpai was based out of Delhi, India. He worked as Multimedia Editor with one of India's leading national dailies Hindustan Times, where he set up the company's digital video operations. In an earlier role as ICFJ-Knight Fellow for multimedia storytelling, he worked with some of India's top media companies on innovative digital storytelling.
In his various assignments as a journalist over nearly 16 years, he has worked with The Indian Express, managing their Delhi city reporting bureau, and with Mail Today as Deputy Bureau Chief for the city reporting team. He has reported extensively on politics, urban governance and law and order.
His videos on public health and development issues have been published in The Economist, London and CCTV, China. In his previous role at the Centre for Science and Environment he focussed on data journalism besides online videos. His research work data journalism in India was published recently in an academic publication on the data journalism landscape in Asia.
He taught reporting at the Express Institute of Media Studies, a journalism training school in Indian capital Delhi managed by The Indian Express group. He is an alumnus of the Konrad Adenauer Asian Center for Journalism at Ateneo de Manila University, Philippines and the Indian Institute of Mass Communication in Delhi, India.
DJ Clark
INTERNATIONAL EXPERT/ Interactive journalism & immersive experienceBased in Hong Kong, DJ is currently Multimedia Director at China Daily Asia Pacific, host and producer of the adventure travel show Drone & Phone, video advisor to the Asia News Network and course leader for the University of Bolton MA in Visual Design. Previously DJ was a regular contributor to The Economist, BBC radio and National Geographic.
DJ has won numerous awards for his work throughout his career. In 2020 his film Battleground PolyU won seven international prizes including World Press Photo Interactive of the Year and was nominated for a Webby.
Both as a practitioner and researcher DJ has a deep interest in visual journalism as a tool for change in the Majority World. In 2009 he completed a PhD at the University of Durham that focused on the subject and has gone on to write and speak extensively on the issue. He has taught at the Asia Center for Journalism, been a tutor for World Press Photo & British Council workshops, was a co-founder/tutor of Multimedia Train and is co-host of the Multimedia Week and Hong Kong History podcasts . In 2017 DJ was chair of the World Press Photo Short Form Digital Story Telling jury.
Tanvi Mishra
INTERNATIONAL EXPERT/ Journalism ethicsTanvi Mishra works with images as a photo editor, curator, and writer, based in New Delhi, India. Among her interests are South Asian visual histories, peoples’ movements as well as the notion of fiction in photography, particularly in the current political landscape. Until recently, she was the Creative Director of The Caravan, a journal of politics and culture published out of Delhi. She is part of the photo-editorial team of PIX, a South Asian publication and display practice. She works as an independent curator and has been part of the curatorial teams of Photo Kathmandu
Annelise Giseburt
INTERNATIONAL EXPERT/ Investigative journalism and safety guideline
Annelise Giseburt is a reporter with Tokyo Investigative Newsroom Tansa, a nonprofit media organization in Japan, where she leads Tansa’s participation in cross-border investigations. Before joining Tansa, Annelise lived for four years in Hiroshima, where she worked as a translator, freelance writer, and fellow at a Hiroshima-based United Nations office. She is fluent in Japanese.
Makoto Watanabe
INTERNATIONAL EXPERT/ Investigative journalism and safety guideline
Before founding Tansa, Makoto worked for 16 years as a reporter in the Asahi Shimbun metro and investigative sections, where he investigated topics such as the Fukushima nuclear disaster. Under Watanabe’s leadership, Tansa has broken stories on a wide range of topics and received numerous awards, including the Supporter of the Free Press Award from the Foreign Correspondents Club of Japan and the Journalism X Award from the Journalism Citizen Support Fund. Watanabe is also co-creator and head of Tansa’s online investigative journalism course, the first of its kind in Japan.
