3 days of filmmaking practise

A collaboration between Pathshala South Asian Media Institute with Terzo Paesaggio, Kaiya Collective, 5e6, Fondazione Pianoterra, Stony Brook University, and Yogurt.

A film practice that focuses on the experience of craftsmanship. Relating to cinema in 3 days of non-performative workshops, activating a process where cinema becomes an object to be explored laterally - exploring artistic objects born during the production of Still Here, the latest film by Suranga D. Katugampala.

Suranga D Katugampala

Suranga is an Italian/Sri Lankan filmmaker who explores hybrid visual languages between fiction and documentary. After numerous short films, in 2017 he developed his first feature film, For a Son, got awarded in numerous international film festivals. Together with fellow adventurers Suranga founded in Sri Lanka the collective / production house, Kaiya Collective, with the ambition of exploring cinematographic practices that constantly question the contemporary sense of image and sound. He develops several video-installation projects, such as A city born from the Indian Ocean, and The season of great hunts. He has just finished post-producing his new film, Still Here, which will be released in 2024.

Workshop schedule

5 July [Day -1]
10 am – 6 pm
• Presentation of the concept book as an element from which to trigger the 3 days filmmaking practice.
• selection of the work group
• selection of the workstation
• definition of the 3 days video installation project (definition of filmmaking practice, sharing reflections, sharing visions, conditions, actions, divisions into groups)
• start of work / city exploration

6 July [Day -2]

10 am – 6 pm
• Shooting / editing / imagine the method of restitution (definition of the installation: how, where, when etc.)

7 July [Day -3]

10 am – 5 pm
• End of editing + presentation of the video installations (projection of the video installation) + closing and sharing thoughts.


Public Talk/Presentation: 7 July 2024 | 6.00 pm – 8.00 pm, Level 8

In the Public Talk and presentation session to be held by this future filmmaker on the 7 July at the Drik Path Bhobon (Level 8), Suranga K will elaborate his practices in film and video installations. In the session he will also demonstrate his recently published book followed by his thoughts on making films which question the contemporary reading of image and sound. The session will be followed by a QnA with the filmmaker.
